EDITORS COMMENTS
Robert Curthose, the rebellious son of King William I, engages in a fierce battle with his father at the siege of Gerberoy Castle in Normandy, 1079. This lithograph print from 1864 captures the intense moment when family ties are severed amidst medieval warfare. The eldest son of William the Conqueror, Robert's defiance stems from a prank orchestrated by his brothers, William Rufus and Henry. Fuelled by anger and ambition, he rises against his own flesh and blood to claim what he believes is rightfully his. Clad in armor that reflects the spirit of the eleventh century, Duke Robert wields his sword with determination as he clashes with King William I on this historic battlefield. The fortifications surrounding them echo their tumultuous relationship - a motte and bailey castle serving as both witness and backdrop to this familial conflict. This image transports us back to an era where power struggles were fought not only on political fronts but also within families themselves. It reminds us that even those bound by blood can be torn apart by differing ambitions. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from James Doyle's Historica Graphica Collection, we are reminded of the complexities of fatherhood and sovereignty. It serves as a testament to human nature's unyielding desire for power and legacy.
