EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, hailing from the May 4th, 1850 edition of Rome, Illustrated and Described, published in the Illustrated London News, presents a breathtaking view of ancient Rome. The frontispiece showcases a panoramic perspective of the city, including iconic landmarks such as St. Peter's Basilica, Trajan's Column, the Egyptian Obelisk of the Piazza del Popolo, and various other architectural wonders. In the foreground, the She-Wolf suckling Romulus and Remus is depicted, an ancient bronze group discovered at the foot of the Palatine Hill. Nearby, the celebrated masterpiece of ancient Greek art, commonly known as the Dying Gladiator, is displayed. This sculpture, however, is also believed by some to represent a noble Gaul. Michael Angelo's colossal statue of Moses in the transept of the Church of San Pietro in Vincoli is also featured, adding to the rich artistic tapestry of the image. The caption quotes Lord Byron from Childe Harold, Canto iv, emphasizing the historical significance and passion of the Roman people: "Here a proud people's passions were exhaled, From the first hour of empire in the bud, To that when further worlds to conquer failed." This engraving, taken from A Memoir of the History and Topography of Rome by William Joseph O'Shea, offers a glimpse into the grandeur and allure of Rome during the 19th century, inviting us to explore the depths of its ancient history and artistic heritage.
