The Spouting Horn in a Storm, 1872. Creator: W. J. Linton

The " Spouting Horn" in a Storm, 1872. Rocks on the coast of Maine, north eastern USA: a wide chasm in the cliff, which extends down to the water and opens to the sea through a small archway below high-water mark. At low water the arch may be reached over the slippery, weed-covered rocks, and the chasm within ascended by means of uncertain footholds in the sides of the rocky wall. A few adventurous tourists have accomplished this feat, but it is a very dangerous one. If the foot should slip on the smooth, briny rock, and the adventurer glide into the water, escape would be almost impossible. The waves would suck him down into their depths - now toss him upon rocks, whose slippery surface would resist every attempt to grasp, then drag him back into their foaming embrace. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. I, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1872]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "The Spouting Horn in a Storm, 1872" takes us on a thrilling journey to the rugged coast of Maine in northeastern USA. The image showcases the awe-inspiring power of nature as it captures a wide chasm in the cliff that extends down to the water and opens into the sea through a small archway below high-water mark. The scene is both majestic and treacherous, with slippery, weed-covered rocks leading to the archway at low tide. Only a few daring tourists have managed to accomplish this feat, braving uncertain footholds on the rocky wall. However, this adventure comes with great risk as even a slight slip could plunge one into the unforgiving waters below. As described by William Cullen Bryant in his book "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In" escaping such an unfortunate event would be almost impossible. The relentless waves would drag anyone who falls into their depths or toss them upon slippery rocks that resist any attempt at grasping for safety. This remarkable photograph not only captures the beauty of this natural wonder but also serves as a reminder of its inherent danger. It transports us back to 1872 when W. J. Linton skillfully captured this moment using pen and pencil for "Picturesque America". Through his lens, we can appreciate both the allure and peril that exist within our world's most breathtaking landscapes.
