Study for The Bear Hunt (for the Alcazar, Madrid), c. 1639. Creator
Study for " The Bear Hunt" (for the Alcazar, Madrid), c. 1639. Many of Rubenss designs for large-scale paintings began with small sketches like this. Rubens captured all the ferocious energy of a hunt in swift strokes of liquid brown paint with just occasional touches of colour. The large finished painting (probably now destroyed) was installed in the Alcazar, King Phillip IVs palace in Madrid

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a study for "The Bear Hunt" by the renowned Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens. Created around 1639, this small sketch served as the initial inspiration for one of Rubens's grand-scale paintings. Known for his ability to capture dynamic scenes with remarkable skill, Rubens used swift strokes of liquid brown paint to convey the ferocious energy of the hunt, occasionally adding touches of color to enhance certain elements. Sadly, the large finished painting that was based on this study is believed to be lost or destroyed. However, it once adorned the Alcazar in Madrid, which was King Phillip IV's palace during that time. The Alcazar was undoubtedly enriched by Rubens's masterpiece and its absence leaves us yearning to witness its grandeur. As an important figure in Baroque art and a representative of the Antwerp School, Rubens left an indelible mark on Flemish heritage through his oil-on-wood paintings like this one. This particular artwork now resides within The Cleveland Museum of Art collection. Heritage Art/Heritage Images has beautifully captured this significant piece from history in their print rendition. It serves as a testament not only to Rubens's extraordinary talent but also to our collective appreciation for preserving and cherishing cultural treasures such as these.
