"Under Green Leaves" - Lullingsworth, drawn by S. Read, 1857. We extract from the new volume of poems, by Charles Mackay, with the suggestive and pleasant title of "Under Green Leaves", the following lines from the poem entitled "Lullingsworth", which has suggested to Mr. S. Read the beautiful design which we have this week engraved: "It is an ancient house: Four hundred years ago, Men dug its basements deep, And roof'd it from the wind; And held within its walls The joyous marriage feast, The christening, and the dance. Four hundred years ago They scoop'd and till'd the moat, Where now the rank weeds grow, And waterlilies vie In whiteness with the swans, A solitary pair That float, and feed, and float, Beneath the crumbling bridge And past the garden wall'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

Under Green Leaves

EDITORS COMMENTS
: A Victorian-era Poetic Illustration by Henry Duff Linton and S. Read, 1857 This evocative print, titled "Under Green Leaves - Lullingsworth," is a beautiful collaboration between poet Charles Mackay, artist S. Read, and engraver Henry Duff Linton, published in 1857. The image is inspired by a poem from Mackay's collection, "Under Green Leaves," which was first published in 1855. The poem, titled "Lullingsworth," paints a vivid picture of an ancient house, steeped in history and surrounded by the passage of time. The lines read: "It is an ancient house: Four hundred years ago, Men dug its basements deep, And roof'd it from the wind; And held within its walls The joyous marriage feast, The christening, and the dance." S. Read, inspired by these verses, created a stunning visual interpretation of the poem, which Linton then meticulously engraved. The image depicts a picturesque scene of an old, ivy-covered house, nestled among lush greenery and a serene moat. A solitary pair of swans glides gracefully on the water, adding to the tranquil atmosphere. The poem continues to describe the moat, where "rank weeds grow, And waterlilies vie In whiteness with the swans," and the crumbling bridge and garden wall that frame the scene. The overall effect is one of nostalgia and longing for a bygone era. This exquisite print, with its poetic inspiration and intricate detail, is a testament to the artistic and literary collaborations of the Victorian era. It invites us to imagine the stories that lie hidden within the walls of ancient houses and the beauty that can be found beneath the green leaves.
