EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite miniature, dating from the late 15th century, is a beautiful example of a devotional image from a Book of Hours. The central figure is the Virgin Mary, depicted in profile with a serene expression and outstretched hands in prayer. Surrounding her are various saints, each identified by their distinctive attributes and haloed heads. The saints include Saint Catherine of Alexandria, Saint Barbara, and Saint John the Evangelist, among others. The Latin text at the bottom reads "Domine labia mea aperies et os meum adnuntiabit [annunciabit?] laudem tuam" or "O Lord, open thou my lips and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise." This prayer was often recited before reading from the text of the Book of Hours, which contained the daily prayers and devotions for the laity. The image is executed in tempera on parchment or vellum, a technique common in medieval manuscripts. This miniature is a testament to the rich artistic and religious heritage of the Middle Ages and a reminder of the deep spiritual connection people had with their faith during this period. The intricate details, vibrant colors, and delicate brushwork are a feast for the eyes and a reminder of the beauty and complexity of mediaeval art. This image is currently housed in the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, and is a cherished treasure of the world's artistic and cultural heritage.
