This exquisite 11th century artifact, titled "Vishnu and Shri Lakshmi on Garuda," is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of South Asia. The sculpture, carved from phyllite rock, depicts the Hindu deities Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi gracefully seated on the mythical bird Garuda. Vishnu, the preserver of the universe, is shown in his reclined form, while Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, is depicted with four arms, each holding an object symbolizing abundance and fertility. The intricate carving on this handcrafted statuette reveals the skillful artistry of the unknown artist. The deities are adorned with ornate jewelry and garments, adding to their regal presence. Garuda, the vehicle of Vishnu, is depicted with spread wings, symbolizing freedom and power.
