EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 11th century artifact, titled "Vishnu and Shri Lakshmi on Garuda," is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of South Asia. The sculpture, carved from phyllite rock, depicts the Hindu deities Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi gracefully seated on the mythical bird Garuda. Vishnu, the preserver of the universe, is shown in his reclined form, while Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, is depicted with four arms, each holding an object symbolizing abundance and fertility. The intricate carving on this handcrafted statuette reveals the skillful artistry of the unknown artist. The deities are adorned with ornate jewelry and garments, adding to their regal presence. Garuda, the vehicle of Vishnu, is depicted with spread wings, symbolizing freedom and power. The sculpture's vibrant colors, although faded over time, once would have added to the divine aura of the piece. This sculpture is a rare example of the fusion of Hindu and Buddhist influences in South Asian art during the 11th century. It is believed to have originated from either India or Southeast Asia and is now a prized possession of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). The sculpture's journey through history and its preservation in a museum allows future generations to appreciate and learn from the artistic and cultural traditions of the past.
