EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Wagon from the Oseberg ship, taken in 1935. The Oseberg ship itself is an incredibly well-preserved Viking vessel that was buried around 834 AD, although its origins are believed to be even older. Discovered within a grand burial mound at the Oseberg farm near Tonsberg in Norway, this intricately carved cart is thought to have been constructed prior to 800. The wagon's exquisite decorative carvings reveal the immense craftsmanship of its creators. Constructed using various types of wood, it possesses the unique ability to be dismantled for transportation purposes, such as by ship. This feature highlights its versatility and adaptability during a time when road and water transport were crucial modes of travel. Captured in monochrome, this image transports us back through time to witness a piece of history frozen in stillness. It evokes a sense of awe and curiosity about the lives led by those who built and utilized such impressive horse-drawn vehicles. Preserved within these timber structures lies not only evidence of advanced engineering but also glimpses into ancient cultures that thrived centuries ago. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are reminded of our shared human heritage and how each artifact holds countless untold stories waiting to be discovered by archaeologists like R. H Hodgkin who documented them with great care.
