Watering-Places of Devon - Exmouth, from Starcross, 1850. Creators: Birket Foster, Edmund Evans

Watering-Places of Devon - Exmouth, from Starcross, 1850. Exmouth...is the oldest watering- place in the country, and was one of the principal ports of Devonshire in the reign of King John...An embankment was commenced early in the present century ; and a number of houses in the neighbourhood of the Parade and Beacon first gave to Exmouth the name of watering-place, and led to the buildings on the face or brow of the hill, called the Beacon-hill, which now forms the centre of its attractions..."The climate here, " says Dr. Shapter, "partakes of the same character as that of the district, modified by the sea only; an inhabitant to whose opinion I would defer, thinks it more equable than any upon the coast, and that this may in some measure be owing to its exemption from the damp vapours so often experienced in the valley towns." From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
Exmouth, Devon, England, 1850: A Picturesque Scene of Maritime Leisure Exmouth, situated in Devon, England, is recognized as the oldest watering-place in the country, with a rich history dating back to the reign of King John. This charming coastal town was once a significant port of Devonshire, but its reputation as a popular seaside resort began in the early 19th century with the construction of an embankment. The area around the Parade and Beacon Hill became the nucleus of Exmouth's transformation into a thriving watering-place. Birket Foster and Edmund Evans' captivating print, 'Exmouth, Devon, from Starcross, 1850,' offers a glimpse into the idyllic landscape of this Victorian-era resort. The image showcases the picturesque scene of boats dotting the tranquil waters, with the town's distinctive Beacon Hill rising in the background. The boats, which were essential for fishing and transportation during this era, add to the authenticity of the scene. The climate of Exmouth was considered particularly appealing, with Dr. Shapter noting that it shared the same character as the surrounding district, but with the added benefit of being exempt from the damp vapors common in valley towns. The town's popularity continued to grow, attracting visitors from across Britain who sought the health benefits of the sea air and the picturesque beauty of the coast. This print, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, showcases the charm and allure of Exmouth during the Victorian era. The intricate details of the boats, the gentle curve of the beach, and the imposing Beacon Hill all contribute to a scene that transports us back in time, offering a glimpse into the rich history and appeal of this quintessential English seaside resort.
