The etching engraving, skillfully created by Pierre Philippe Choffard, a French artist from Paris (1730–1809), captures the moment of surrender between Khan Badakhsan and the Qing forces in 1759. The scene depicted on this sheet measuring 25 3/4 x 39 9/16 inches (65.4 x 100.5 cm) is truly remarkable. It illustrates a typical Manchu military encampment with its circular perimeter enclosing the center where Khan Badakhsan has been granted an audience. Surrounding him are cavalrymen showcasing their martial skills and horsemanship, creating an impressive display of power.
