EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the iconic Birmingham Rotunda and St. Martin's Circus in England during May 1966. The Rotunda, a Grade II listed building, is a landmark of Birmingham's city centre and was designed by John Madin. Completed in 1965, it was the first major building in the UK to be clad entirely in precast concrete. The circular structure houses a multi-storey car park and a hotel, with the uppermost level offering panoramic views of the city. Adjacent to the Rotunda stands St. Martin's Circus, a roundabout featuring a large fountain at its centre. The circus, designed by Thomas Telford in the late 18th century, was originally intended to be the site of a market. However, it has since been used as a traffic roundabout and a popular meeting place. The photograph transports us back to the 1960s, a decade marked by significant social and cultural changes. The modernist architecture of the Rotunda stands in stark contrast to the traditional buildings surrounding it, reflecting the city's evolving identity. The tranquil waters of the fountain in St. Martin's Circus add a serene touch to the bustling cityscape, creating a sense of harmony between old and new. This photograph is a testament to Birmingham's rich history and its ability to adapt and evolve while preserving its past. It offers a glimpse into the city's past and invites us to reflect on the changes that have shaped it into the vibrant and dynamic place it is today.
