EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the grandeur and history of Genoa, Italy's Monument to General Belgrano, erected in the heart of the city's Piazza Tommaseo during the 1920s. The monument, dedicated to the Argentine military and political figure General Jose de San Martin de Bustamante y Rosas, better known as Jose de San Martin, pays homage to his role in the South American Wars of Independence. Born in Yungay, Chile, in 1778, San Martin rose through the ranks of the Spanish military to become a general. In the late 18th century, he played a crucial role in the defense of the Spanish colonies against the French invasion. However, his sympathies for the cause of South American independence eventually led him to join forces with Simon Bolivar and other revolutionary leaders. Together, they successfully liberated several South American countries, including Argentina, Chile, and Peru. After his retirement from military life, San Martin settled in Europe, where he was welcomed as a hero. In recognition of his contributions to the cause of South American independence, the city of Genoa, Italy, erected this monument in his honor in 1927. The monument features a statue of San Martin on horseback, with an inscription in Italian and Spanish, paying tribute to his military achievements and his role in the liberation of South America. This photograph, taken in the 1920s, captures the monument in all its glory, with the sun casting long shadows over the piazza and the statue standing proudly against the backdrop of the city's historic architecture. The monument remains a popular tourist attraction and a symbol of the close ties between Italy and South America.
