Home Decor from Mary Evans Picture Library
Illustration by Cecil Aldin, Jim, a bobtail sheepdog
Illustration by Cecil Aldin -- Jim, a bobtail sheepdog, owned by the actress Fabia Drake. The dog was a perfect actor, taking part in a childrens play called The Happy Family, produced at the Prince of Wales and Strand Theatres on two consecutive Christmas holidays, based on a story by Aldin himself. For six weeks each year, Jim waited in the wings for his entrance cue, barked at the right moment when on stage, and made his exit at the correct time, never seeming to tire of the monotony of the nightly performances. Noel Coward, Mimi Crawford and Fabia Drake were also taking part. Date: 1927

EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting illustration by Cecil Aldin showcases Jim, a bobtail sheepdog, who was not just a beloved pet but also a talented performer. Owned by the actress Fabia Drake, Jim was a star in his own right, taking part in a children's play called "The Happy Family," which was staged at the Prince of Wales and Strand Theatres during two consecutive Christmas holidays in 1927. The play, based on a story by Aldin himself, became a holiday tradition for six weeks each year. Jim, with his distinctive short tail, waited patiently in the wings for his entrance cue, barking perfectly on cue when on stage, and making an exit at the correct time. His dedication and enthusiasm never seemed to tire, even amidst the monotony of nightly performances. Joining Jim on stage were notable personalities of the time, including Noel Coward, Mimi Crawford, and Fabia Drake. The trio brought the story to life, creating an unforgettable experience for audiences young and old. This image offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the unique bond between a woman and her dog, as well as the rich history of entertainment during the 1920s. Jim's story serves as a reminder that sometimes the most unexpected performers can steal the show.
