EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured lithograph, created by R K Thomas after a drawing by D Skillett in 1844, depicts the iron steam vessels Meteor and Prince of Wales as they gracefully leave Brunswick Wharf in Blackwall. Built by Miller, Ravenhill & Co., these two pioneering steamships represent a pivotal moment in maritime history. The Meteor, launched in 1838, was the first iron-hulled steamship to operate on the River Thames, while the Prince of Wales, launched in 1843, was the first iron-hulled steamship to be built in Britain specifically for the Atlantic trade. Both vessels were groundbreaking innovations in their time, as they combined the advantages of steam propulsion with the durability and strength of iron hulls. The image captures the Meteor and Prince of Wales in their prime, with their distinctive funnels billowing smoke as they depart from Brunswick Wharf. The intricate details of their design are beautifully rendered in the lithograph, from the ornate decorations on their hulls to the rigging of their sails. The vibrant colours and dynamic composition add to the sense of motion and energy, making this a truly captivating snapshot of maritime history. This lithograph is a testament to the ingenuity and innovation of the Victorian era, as well as the transformative impact of steam power on transportation. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the future of shipping was being shaped by the vision and determination of forward-thinking engineers and entrepreneurs.
