EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking 18th century portrait depicts Katherine of Aragon (1485-1536), the first wife of Henry VIII of England. Born in Spain as Catalina de Aragón y Castilla, she was the daughter of Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, rulers of the Spanish Kingdoms. Katherine arrived in England in 1501 to marry Arthur, Prince of Wales, who died shortly after their wedding. She then became the consort of Henry VIII in 1509, following his brother's death. The portrait shows Katherine in the later years of her life, with an air of regal dignity and a sense of quiet strength. She wears a richly embroidered gown, adorned with pearls and other precious jewels, a sign of her royal status. The pearl necklace she wears is particularly noteworthy, as it was a gift from her husband, Henry VIII, and was later passed down to their daughter, Mary I, who became Queen of England in her own right. Katherine's Catholic faith played a significant role in her life and her reign as queen. She was a devout woman, and her commitment to her faith caused tension with Henry VIII, who sought to establish the Church of England as an independent entity from the Roman Catholic Church. Despite this, Katherine remained steadfast in her beliefs and was a strong advocate for her daughter, Mary, who eventually restored Catholicism as the official religion of England. This portrait, which is now housed in the National Portrait Gallery in London, is a testament to Katherine's enduring legacy as a queen and a woman of great faith and strength. The artist of this work remains unknown, but the painting is a valuable addition to the artistic and historical record of the Tudor period in England.
