EDITORS COMMENTS
This elegant and captivating portrait captures the moment of engagement between Lady Margaret Sheila Mackellar Chisholm and Lord Francis Edward Scudamore St Clair-Erskine, later known as Lord Loughborough, in 1916. Lady Chisholm, the beautiful and vivacious daughter of Harry Chisholm of Sydney, NSW, Australia, was married to Loughborough in 1915. However, their union was fraught with Loughborough's drinking and gambling habits, leading to their divorce in 1926. At the time of their engagement, the rumors of a romantic link between Lady Chisholm and Albert, Duke of York, the future King George VI, swirled in society circles. These allegations, which came to light in 1920, occurred while Lady Chisholm was still married to Loughborough. Despite the scandal, Lady Chisholm moved on and married Sir John Millbanke, the eleventh baronet, in 1928. Later in life, in 1954, she wed Prince Dimitri Romanoff of Russia. Lady Chisholm's fascinating life story is a testament to the complexities and intrigues of the upper classes and aristocracy during the early 20th century. This portrait, with its timeless elegance and allure, offers a glimpse into the past and the lives of these historical figures.
