EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting print captures a moment from the Mozart family's grand tour in 1762, when Maria Anna (Nannerl) and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart performed before Empress Maria Theresa of Austria at the Imperial Court in Vienna. The Empress, known for her patronage of the arts, is depicted in regal attire, seated on a throne with her courtiers in attendance. Nannerl, the elder sister of Wolfgang, plays the clavichord, her expression one of focused concentration. Wolfgang, the prodigious young composer, plays the violin, his eyes locked with those of the Empress as he delivers a captivating performance. The siblings' musical prowess was renowned throughout Europe, and their audience with the Empress was a significant milestone in their careers. This beautifully colored engraving by R. Brend Amour, created in 18th century Europe, offers a glimpse into the world of the Mozart family during their time at the Imperial Court.
