This photograph print showcases Muhammad Ali Pasha, also known as Mehmet Ali or Mehmed Ali, the Albanian commander in the Ottoman army who rose to power and self-declared himself as the Khedive, or ruler, of Egypt and Sudan in the mid-19th century. Born in 1769 in the Ottoman province of Kosovo, Ali began his military career under the Ottoman sultan, eventually leading the Egyptian army to victory against the French invasion in 1801. Muhammad Ali's reign marked a significant period in Egyptian history, as he transformed Egypt into a powerful and prosperous empire. He implemented various reforms, modernized the military, and initiated large-scale infrastructure projects, including the construction of the Suez Canal. Ali's rule also extended to Sudan, where he established the Mahdist state and expanded Egyptian territories. In this image, Muhammad Ali is depicted wearing a traditional Egyptian turban, symbolizing his status as a powerful and respected leader.
