Chairman of the Ypres Last Post Committee with bugles

The Ceremony of the Last Post, in which firemen buglers play the Last Post under the Menin Gate at 8pm each night is, in its simplicity, one of the most moving acts of Remembrance in the world. Only on rare occasions is the ceremony other than open to all members of the public who wish to attend. The firemen are frequently asked to travel to other events to play, including trips overseas. Here from left to right is the Chairman of the Committee, Benoit Mottrie and the authors Mrs Valmai Holt and Major Tonie Holt who are holding silver bugles used in the 1920s. Date: 2016

EDITORS COMMENTS
The poignant tradition of the Last Post Ceremony in Ypres, Belgium, sees firemen buglers playing this solemn tune under the Menin Gate every night at 8pm. The simple yet moving act of remembrance, which is open to the public on rare occasions, has gained international recognition. In this photograph, taken in 2016, Benoit Mottrie, Chairman of the Ypres Last Post Committee, is seen with authors Valmai and Tonie Holt. The couple are holding a pair of silver bugles used in the 1920s, adding a historical touch to the image. The Last Post Ceremony holds great significance as it commemorates the fallen soldiers of the First World War, particularly those whose graves are not known. The firemen are often requested to perform at other events, even overseas, making this tradition a beacon of respect and unity for people all around the world.
