EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the ancient and enduring tradition of the Wroth Money ceremony, which takes place on Knightlow Hill near Dunchurch in Warwickshire every St. Martin's Day. Dating back over a thousand years, this custom connects the present with the remote past when central England was largely wild and uncultivated. The Duke of Buccleuch is acknowledged with a payment of "wroth money" as a tribute for certain concessions granted by his ancestors. Failure to pay this sum, amounting to 20 shillings or a white bull with a red nose and red ears, would result in forfeit. The ceremony on this early winter morning in 1902 stands as a testament to the rich history and traditions that continue to shape the region. The foggy landscape, with its mist-covered hills and trees, adds an ethereal quality to the scene, making it a poignant reminder of the deep-rooted customs that have persisted through the centuries.
