This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Jean Victor Dupin junior for Pierre Joseph Buchoz's Herbier Artificial in 1783, showcases the intricate details of the Cuckoo-pint, or Arum maculatum. The plant is also known as the Syphilitic Arum due to its historical association with the symptoms of syphilis. The image depicts both the flower and fruit of the plant. The Cuckoo-pint derives its common name from the shape of its spathe, which resembles a cuckoo's head. The plant's fruit, shown here, is a distinctive red berry. In the context of syphilis, the association between the Cuckoo-pint and the disease is rooted in the belief that the plant's symptoms, such as chancres, were similar to those of syphilis. Chancres are indurated, or hardened, lesions that can appear on various parts of the body, including the face, eyelids, tongue, lips, chin, and forehead.
