EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking portrait, Dr. Wendell Phillips (1921-1975) is depicted in the prime of his adventurous life, with an air of both scholarly intensity and dashing charm. Phillips was an American archaeologist and oil magnate who made history in the fields of archaeology and business, particularly in the areas that are now modern-day Yemen and Oman. Phillips' archaeological career began in the 1950s, during which time he led some of the first excavations in the region. He unearthed numerous artefacts from the ancient kingdom of Saba' in what is now Yemen, gaining international recognition for his discoveries. Phillips' tales of adventure and daring exploits earned him the nickname "America's Lawrence of Arabia." Following his archaeological pursuits, Phillips turned his attention to the oil industry, acquiring concessions in Oman, Venezuela, South Korea, Indonesia, and other countries. By 1966, he had become the largest individual holder of oil rights in the world, with a net worth of $120 million. In this photograph, Dr. Phillips is seen here in a formal setting, dressed in a suit and tie, but the adventurous spirit that defined his life is evident in his piercing gaze and confident posture. He is seated next to Sheikh Hussein Al Ali Harith, the ruler of the Al Hajar Mountains in Oman, with whom Phillips had a close working relationship during his archaeological expeditions. This portrait captures a pivotal moment in the life of a remarkable man who straddled the worlds of archaeology and business, leaving a lasting impact on both fields.
