This copperplate engraving, created by J. Hamilton and published in Francis Grose's "Military Antiquities Respecting a History of the English Army," showcases an impressive collection of medieval armor pieces. The image includes a helmet and brigandine, the helmet adorned with a crest and visor, the brigandine a protective covering for the chest and back. The first iron greave or leg armor is depicted in the lower left corner, followed by a gauntlet belonging to John of Gaunt, the Duke of Lancaster, with intricate designs etched into its surface. The fourth gauntlet, also made of iron, is displayed next to it. The armor collection continues with a gorget, a protective collar worn around the neck, and an iron mace, a weapon used for both offensive and defensive purposes. The antique iron prick spur, number seven, is the final piece in this assemblage. Prick spurs were used to encourage horses to move forward by prodding them with sharp points. This engraving, published by Stockdale in London in 1812, offers a glimpse into the rich history of medieval military technology and the intricacies of armor design. The meticulous details captured in the copperplate engraving allow us to appreciate the craftsmanship and the importance of these armor pieces in protecting warriors during battle.
