EDITORS COMMENTS
Lady Alexandra Haig as Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture and harvest, graces this enchanting photograph from the 1937 Fête Champêtre at Ashcombe House. Hosted by renowned photographer Cecil Beaton and Sir Michael Duff-Assheton-Smith, the event was a grand celebration of Society Nymphs and Shepherds, a popular theme in the 1930s for fancy dress parties. Lady Alexandra Haig, dressed in a magnificent gown adorned with golden wheat sheaves and a wreath of ivy and flowers, embodies the spirit of Ceres. Her serene expression and regal posture exude an air of grace and elegance, fitting for the goddess of abundance and prosperity. The Fête Champêtre, held at Ashcombe House in Surrey, England, was a much-anticipated event in the social calendar of the 1930s. Guests donned elaborate costumes inspired by mythology and folklore, transforming the estate into a magical realm of gods and goddesses, nymphs and shepherds. Cecil Beaton, a master of photography, captured the essence of the event in this stunning photograph. His use of natural light and the lush, green surroundings of Ashcombe House create a dreamlike atmosphere, transporting us back to a bygone era of glamour and enchantment.
