EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius, born as Marcus Aelius Hadrianus Antoninus, who reigned from 138 to 161 AD. The image is a copperplate engraving taken from "The Roman Monarchy," a comprehensive work by Francois Salma and published in Utrecht in 1697. Abraham Bogaerts, a renowned engraver, was responsible for creating this exquisite reproduction. Antoninus Pius is shown in the portrait with a thoughtful and contemplative expression, dressed in the traditional Roman toga, adorned with the laurel wreath symbolizing his imperial power. His image is reminiscent of other Caesars and Kaisers, reflecting the continuity and legacy of the Roman Empire. Antoninus Pius was known for his peaceful reign and his focus on the welfare of the Roman people. He continued many of the policies initiated by his predecessor, Marcus Aurelius, who is famously known for his Stoic philosophy. Antoninus Pius was also a patron of the arts and supported the construction of several public works, including aqueducts and temples. This portrait is an essential piece of historical documentation, providing a glimpse into the visual representation of Roman emperors during the classical period. The intricate details of the engraving, from the folds of the toga to the subtle expressions, offer a tangible connection to the past and the rich history of the Roman Empire.
