EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the Ursine Howler Monkey, Alouatta arctoidea, also known as the Howling Howler Monkey or Ursine Howling Monkey, and formerly as Simia ursina. The monkey's common name derives from its distinctive vocalizations, which can be heard up to three miles away, making it the loudest monkey in the world. The Ursine Howler Monkey is native to Central and South America, primarily found in the tropical rainforests of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and Panama. This primate is a member of the New World monkey family, Atelidae, and is characterized by its prehensile tail, which it uses for balance and locomotion. The engraving, taken from Edward Griffiths' The Animal Kingdom by the Baron Cuvier, published in London by Whittaker in 1824, captures the monkey in a naturalistic pose, sitting on a tree branch with its arms wrapped around its body and its ears laid back. The intricate details of the monkey's fur, facial features, and posture are beautifully rendered in the hand-coloring, making for a visually stunning and accurate representation of the species. The Ursine Howler Monkey is an important species in its ecosystem, playing a role in seed dispersal and serving as a food source for predators such as jaguars and eagles. However, their populations are threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation, making conservation efforts crucial for their survival.
