EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the image of a proud and determined Blackshirt, a member of the Milizia Volontaria per la Sicurezza Nazionale or National Volunteer Militia for National Security, also known as the Squadristi or Blackshirts, in Italy during 1923. The Blackshirts were the paramilitary wing of the National Fascist Party and later became an all-volunteer militia of the Kingdom of Italy. The distinctive black uniforms of the Blackshirts set them apart from other military and political groups of the time. The Blackshirt in this photograph is shown striding confidently, his feathered hat at a rakish angle, and his stern expression conveying a sense of unwavering commitment to the Fascist cause. The Blackshirts were instrumental in the March on Rome in 1922, which led to the downfall of the Italian government and the rise of Benito Mussolini as the country's leader. The Blackshirts' uniforms were designed to instill fear and intimidate opponents, with their black shirts, black ties, and black caps or berets. The feathered hats, known as "boas," were a symbol of the rural origins of many of the Blackshirts and were also meant to evoke the Roman legions. The uniforms were intended to create a sense of unity and discipline among the ranks, as well as to strike fear into the hearts of those who opposed the Fascist regime. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the early days of Fascist Italy and the role of the Blackshirts in shaping the country's political landscape. It is a powerful reminder of the enduring impact of uniforms and attire in shaping the identity and ideology of political movements and the people who embrace them.
