EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage lantern slide depicts the Battle Cruiser Hindenburg, a prominent German warship of the Imperial German Navy during World War I, anchored in Scapa Flow, Orkney Islands, Scotland on June 21, 1919. The Battle Cruiser Hindenburg, named after the German Chancellor Paul von Hindenburg, was one of the largest and most powerful warships of the time, with a displacement of 29,100 tons and an impressive armament of twelve 11-inch guns. After the end of the war, the German High Seas Fleet, including the Hindenburg, was interned in Scapa Flow under the terms of the Armistice. On June 21, 1919, in an unexpected turn of events, the German sailors mutinied and scuttled their ships to prevent them from falling into the hands of the Allied forces. The Battle Cruiser Hindenburg was one of the 52 German warships sunk in the ensuing chaos. This photograph captures the Battle Cruiser Hindenburg in its final days, peacefully anchored in the Scottish waters, a stark contrast to the impending events that would unfold just a few hours later. The image offers a glimpse into the history of naval warfare during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, and serves as a reminder of the pivotal role that Scapa Flow played in the outcome of World War I. The Keasbury-Gordon Photograph Archive Collection, from which this lantern slide is taken, is a valuable resource for historians, researchers, and enthusiasts, providing a wealth of historical images documenting various aspects of the past. This particular image offers a unique perspective on the history of the Battle Cruiser Hindenburg and the events leading to its demise.
