EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, titled "Fishermen Wagenya preparing their wooden tripods across the river rapids at Stanley Falls," is a captivating glimpse into the 19th century African landscape of the Congo Basin. The image, created by W. Meyer for Henry M. Stanley's "El Congo y la Creacion del Estado Independiente de este nombre. Historia de los Trabajos y Exploraciones Verificados" (The Congo and the Founding of its Free State. A Story of Work and Exploration), published in Barcelona around 1890, depicts a group of Wagenya fishermen, an ethnic group from the Lualaba River region in present-day Democratic Republic of Congo. The men are shown anchoring their wooden tripods in the turbulent waters of Stanley Falls, a series of cataracts on the Congo River. Each tripod is composed of several trunks tied together, forming a stable base for the fishermen to secure their baskets and fishing gear. The men are intently focused on their work, using lianas to secure their position and prepare their nets and tackle. The image provides a snapshot of the daily life of indigenous African peoples during a time of significant European exploration and colonization. Henry Morton Stanley, an American journalist and explorer, is known for his extensive travels in Africa, including his famous encounter with David Livingstone in 1871 and his role in the establishment of the Congo Free State under Belgian rule in 1885. Despite the European presence, this engraving offers a glimpse into the strength and resilience of the Congolese people and their traditional fishing methods, which continue to be used in some communities to this day. The image is a poignant reminder of the rich history and cultural diversity of the African continent.
