EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the likeness of General Jean Meiser, a prominent figure in Belgian military history. The sculpture, created circa 1918, depicts the General in uniform, adorned with the insignia of the Commander of the Legion of Honour. Meiser is best known for his heroic defense of Dixmude during World War I. In November 1914, the German army, intent on reaching the Channel ports, laid siege to the small Belgian town. Meiser, with a small garrison of soldiers, valiantly held off the enemy for over two months, buying precious time for the Allied forces to regroup and prepare for the Battle of the Marne. This act of bravery is commemorated in this sculpture, which stands as a testament to Meiser's unwavering determination and courage. This photograph is taken from a colour magazine, likely published in October of an unspecified year. The image is from the March of the Women Collection, available through Mary Evans Prints Online. Paul van den Kerchove, a renowned Belgian photographer, is credited with capturing this powerful image, immortalizing the legacy of General Jean Meiser for future generations.
