EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print, titled 'The Gordon Riots: A Street Scene,' is an 1887 depiction of the chaotic aftermath of the infamous Gordon Riots that took place in London during the summer of 1780. The riots, named after the Protestant Association led by Arthur Gordon, 11th Lord Gordon, erupted due to religious tensions and political unrest, resulting in six days of widespread violence and destruction. In this image by Seymour Lucas, we witness a chaotic street scene filled with the tumult of the riots. Soldiers on horseback, dressed in red coats and bearing weapons, charge through the narrow streets, attempting to quell the unrest. The crowd, a sea of people from all walks of life, scramble to escape the chaos, some carrying belongings or helping the injured. Amidst the pandemonium, a man lies injured on the ground, his leg twisted at an unnatural angle, while others tend to him. This powerful print, created over a century after the events it depicts, serves as a poignant reminder of the turbulent history of London during the late 18th century. The Gordon Riots, a significant event in British history, left a lasting impact on the city and its people, shaping the course of future political and social developments.
