EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait of Holy Roman Empress Maria Theresa (1717-1780) was painted by Jozef Pitschmann (1758-1834) in the 19th century, based on an original 18th century work. The painting is now housed in the Sukiennice Museum, part of the National Museum in Krakow, Poland. Maria Theresa was a prominent European ruler of the 18th century, serving as the Holy Roman Empress, Queen of Bohemia, Queen of Hungary, and Archduchess of Austria. She was the last Habsburg ruler to reign over a large part of Central Europe before the Partitions of Poland in the late 18th century. In this portrait, Maria Theresa is depicted wearing an elaborate curly wig, a sign of her high rank and wealth. Her neck is adorned with a magnificent pearl necklace, which adds to her regal appearance. The empress is shown wearing the Habsburg double-headed eagle insignia on her chest, symbolizing her rule over the Austrian and Hungarian territories. Maria Theresa was a strong and capable ruler, known for her diplomatic skills and military prowess. She faced numerous challenges during her reign, including the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War. Despite these challenges, she managed to maintain the territorial integrity of the Habsburg Empire and left a lasting legacy. This portrait of Maria Theresa is a testament to the grandeur and power of the Habsburg Empire during the modern age. It also serves as a reminder of the rich artistic traditions of Central Europe during this period. The painting's preservation in the National Museum in Krakow ensures that future generations can continue to appreciate the history and culture of this important era.
