EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a pivotal moment from Richard Strauss's iconic opera, "Der Rosenkavalier," in a production that premiered at London's Covent Garden on June 6, 1925. In Act II, the character Octavian (played by Delia Reinhardt) presents the Silver Rose to Sophie (Elizabeth Schumann), a symbol of his love and loyalty. Octavian had earlier been sent by the Marschallin, Sophie's older lover, to seduce Sophie and then leave her, but Octavian's feelings for Sophie have changed. The moment is filled with tension and emotion, as Octavian's declaration of love is met with surprise and uncertainty from Sophie. The footman, standing in the background, adds an air of formality to the scene. The exquisite costumes and elegant setting of the production, which was designed by Alfred Roller, perfectly complement the opera's rich music and complex storyline. This photograph is a beautiful snapshot of a timeless moment in opera history.
