EDITORS COMMENTS
Pergamon: A Glimpse into Ancient Greece in Modern-day Turkey This evocative photograph captures the breathtaking view toward Bergama, the ancient Greek city located in Mysia, northwestern Anatolia, 16 miles from the Aegean Sea. Pergamon, once the capital of the powerful Kingdom of Pergamon during the Hellenistic period (281-133 BC), is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserving the rich history and culture of the ancient world. The city, which is situated on a promontory on the north side of the Caicus River (modern-day Bakırçay), was renowned for its wealth and grandeur during the Attalid dynasty. The ruins of this once-great city, including the impressive Acropolis, the Royal Palace, the Temple of Trajan, and the Altar of Zeus Athena, can be found to the north and west of the modern city of Bergama. Pergamon was also the location of one of the Seven Churches of Asia Minor, to which the Book of Revelation was addressed. The remains of this ancient religious site are pictured here, with their towering columns and intricate stonework standing proudly against the backdrop of the modern bazaar and the bustling Agora below. This photograph, taken in the 1930s, offers a glimpse into the fascinating history and enduring allure of Pergamon, a testament to the rich cultural heritage of ancient Greece that continues to captivate and inspire visitors from around the world.
