EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts Swiss Army Fliegerabteilung Nieuport 28 690 in action during the mid-1930s. The Fliegerabteilung, or Air Battalion, was part of the Swiss military and operated 25 surplus Nieuport 28 fighters, which they had acquired after World War One. The Nieuport 28 was a biplane fighter aircraft that had seen extensive use during the First World War by various European air forces. In this image, we see several of these historic aircraft taking off from a grassy airfield, their wings glinting in the sunlight. The pilots, dressed in their military uniforms, are poised at the ready as they prepare for their mission. The Nieuport 28, with its distinctive open cockpit and wooden fuselage, was a formidable machine for its time, and the Swiss military recognized its value as a cost-effective and capable fighter. Despite being over two decades old, these aircraft continued to serve the Swiss military faithfully until the mid-1930s. The Swiss Air Force's use of these vintage fighters demonstrates their commitment to maintaining a strong and versatile air force, even in the face of budget constraints and the emergence of more modern aircraft. This photograph is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Nieuport 28 and the Swiss military's innovative approach to utilizing surplus military equipment.
