Three Point Turns

EDITORS COMMENTS
: A Humorous Take on Navigating Narrow Lanes with W. Heath Robinson's Double Torpedo Model (1919) In this whimsical illustration by British artist W. Heath Robinson, titled "Three Point Turns," we are transported back to the early 20th century, where navigating narrow lanes in a car presented a significant challenge. Robinson's solution to this problem is nothing short of fantastical: a double torpedo model with a revolving body. The double torpedo car, with its elongated shape and two sets of wheels, is designed to make three-point turns a breeze. The vehicle's most striking feature, however, is its revolving body. As the car approaches a tight corner, the driver simply turns a crank, causing the car to rotate 180 degrees, allowing it to reverse direction and continue on its way. The adjustable motor at the back of the car adds to the humor of the scene, as if to suggest that this incredible contraption is not only designed for turning but also for show. The artist's attention to detail is evident in the quirky expressions of the bystanders, who seem both amused and slightly bewildered by the spectacle unfolding before them. This delightful illustration, created in 1919, offers a glimpse into the imaginative world of W. Heath Robinson, where the impossible becomes possible, and the challenges of everyday life are transformed into fantastical solutions.
