EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the year 1899, showcases a breathtaking view over the Polish capital city of Warsaw, with the Vistula River winding its way through the heart of the urban landscape. At the center of the image, the elegant Kierbedzia Bridge can be seen gracefully arching over the river. Named after the renowned Polish poet and statesman, Juliusz Kiedrzynski, the bridge was a symbol of Warsaw's industrial and cultural prosperity during the late 19th century. However, the tranquility of this scene was shattered during the dark days of World War Two. In September 1944, the Germans, in a brutal act of destruction, dynamited the Kierbedzia Bridge, along with numerous other structures in Warsaw, as part of their scorched earth policy. The bridge, like much of the city, lay in ruins, a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of war. Today, the Kierbedzia Bridge stands rebuilt, a testament to the resilience and determination of the Polish people. The bridge, along with the rest of Warsaw, has been painstakingly restored, allowing future generations to appreciate the beauty and history of this remarkable city. This photograph, taken over a century ago, serves as a powerful reminder of the past, while also offering a glimpse into the enduring spirit of Warsaw and its people.
