Second British action in Narvik harbour by G. H. Davis

The spearhead of the Royal Navys second attack advancing on Narvik, putting the enemy destroyers to flight. The advance of Vice-Admiral Whitworths force upon Narvik was preceded by super-destroyers of the Tribal class in line abreast. Behind them was the Warspite, sending 15-inch shells over them. Seen here are the trapped German destroyers turning to escape up the smaller fjords, where they were later hunted down.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the intensity and decisiveness of the Royal Navy's second attack on Narvik harbour on 13 April 1940. Vice-Admiral Whitworth's force, spearheaded by the super-destroyers of the Tribal class, advances relentlessly towards the enemy destroyers, sending them fleeing in panic. The Warspite, with its powerful 15-inch guns, provides cover from the rear, raining down shells upon the retreating Germans. The trapped German destroyers, desperate to escape, turn up the smaller fjords, where they were later hunted down. This double-page spread from the Illustrated London News provides a vivid account of the pivotal moment in the Battle of Narvik during World War II. The determination and skill of the British naval forces are evident as they successfully dislodged the Germans from their stronghold in this crucial engagement.
