Capturing a Moment in Time - Solomon Islands crossing the Britannia Tubular Bridge
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to the year 1956, as we witness an extraordinary sight - the ex-London, Midland & Scottish Railway Jubilee class 4-6-0 locomotive gracefully arriving on the mainland from Anglesey. As its powerful wheels roll across the magnificent Britannia Tubular Bridge, connecting Holyhead and Anglesey over the Menai Straits, two eager individuals stand by the fence eagerly awaiting its arrival. The Britannia Tubular Bridge itself is a marvel of engineering brilliance. Designed by Robert Stephenson in the mid-19th century and completed in 1850, it stood as a testament to human ingenuity until tragedy struck four decades later when fire ravaged its structure in 1970. However, determined not to let this architectural masterpiece be lost forever, it was rebuilt with an additional road deck above for modern transportation needs. In this snapshot frozen in time, we are transported to an era where steam locomotives ruled supreme and railway travel held immense allure. The excitement radiating from these two figures waiting by the fence is palpable – their faces filled with anticipation and joy as they prepare to wave at this majestic train passing through. As we gaze upon this remarkable image preserved within our National Railway Museum collection, we are reminded of both our rich history and our ability to overcome adversity. It serves as a reminder that even after facing destruction or setbacks along life
