Olympus Mons compared to Mount Everest

This image compares the height of Earths Mount Everest with Olympus Mons, a shield volcano on Mars and the tallest mountain in the known Solar System. Olympus Mons rises to a height of 26 km above the surrounding plains, and 21 km above Mars datum (a Martian reference point equivalent to sea level on Earth). Mount Everest, by contrast, is only 8.84 km above sea level. Indeed, Olympus Mons is so tall and wide that if you stood on it, you would not know you were on a mountain - the slope is too shallow and the mountains rim would be over the horizon. In this image, however, Olympus Mons is shown at 1/3 of its actual width, for clarity

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring comparison between Earth's renowned Mount Everest and the colossal Olympus Mons, a shield volcano on Mars. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded of the sheer magnitude of our universe. Olympus Mons stands as an unrivaled giant in the known Solar System, reaching an astonishing height of 26 km above its surrounding plains and towering 21 km above Mars datum. In stark contrast, Mount Everest appears diminutive with its elevation of merely 8.84 km above sea level on Earth. The immensity of Olympus Mons is such that if one were to stand atop it, they would be oblivious to their presence on a mountain. The slope is so gentle and vast that the mountain's rim would extend beyond the horizon itself. To aid comprehension, this image portrays Olympus Mons at just one-third of its actual width for enhanced clarity. Through this remarkable visual representation, we are granted a glimpse into both the grandeur and diversity within our solar system. It serves as a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity about worlds beyond our own and ignites wonderment about what other extraordinary wonders lie undiscovered among distant planets. Captured by Science Photo Library, this photograph not only celebrates scientific exploration but also invites us to ponder our place in the cosmos – humbled by nature's ability to create such breathtaking spectacles across multiple celestial bodies.
