George Calver, English instrument maker
George Calver (1834-1927) English scientific instrument maker. Calvers interest in astronomy began in childhood when his local clergyman showed him a reflecting telescope and challenged him to produce a mirror of better quality. He accepted the challenge, and spent his life producing mirrors for telescopes. His business flourished and grew, and the high quality of his work meant his mirrors were bought by amateur and professional astronomers all over the world. He continued working into his nineties, and by the time he died had produced as many as 4000 excellent optical mirrors
