Lake Texcoco Collection

Lake Texcoco was a large lake located in the Valley of Mexico, which is now part of modern-day Mexico City. It was an important part of the Aztec civilization and served as their capital city. The lake had an area of over 1,000 square miles and was fed by several rivers and streams. It also had five islands that were used for religious ceremonies and other activities. The lake provided food, transportation, water for agriculture, and a place to fish and hunt for the Aztecs. Unfortunately, due to urbanization in the 20th century most has been drained or filled in with sediment from nearby rivers. Today only a few small areas remain where one can still experience its beauty and importance to Mexican culture.
