Tantia Topi, the Indian rebel leader, 1857 (w / c)

5920126 Tantia Topi, the Indian rebel leader, 1857 (w/c) by Baugh, Captain C.R. (fl.1857); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Tantia Topi, the Indian rebel leader, 1857.
Watercolour sketch from life by Captain C R Baugh, 9th Bombay Native Infantry, 1857 circa.
Tantya Tope was a Maratha Brahman and one of the best rebel military leaders during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859). He eventually assumed command of Nana Sahibs army, but after his defeat at Cawnpore by Sir Colin Campbell on 6 December 1857, he moved to the relief of Jhansi, whose Rani was besieged by the British. Again defeated, he then took his remaining forces into Gwalior alongside the Rani, hoping to overthrow its pro-British ruler. The British defeated the rebels at Kotah-ke-Serai on 17 June. The Rani was killed in this action. Most rebels surrendered or went into hiding, but Tantya managed to dodge the British until April 1859 when he was betrayed and then hanged.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Tantia Topi, the fearless Indian rebel leader of 1857. Created by Captain C. R. Baugh, a talented artist from the 9th Bombay Native Infantry, this watercolour sketch captures the essence of Tantya Tope's commanding presence during the Indian Mutiny. Tantya Tope, a Maratha Brahman and renowned military strategist, emerged as one of the most formidable leaders among the rebels. After assuming command of Nana Sahib's army, he faced defeat at Cawnpore against Sir Colin Campbell on December 6th, 1857. Undeterred by setbacks, he swiftly moved to relieve Jhansi where its Rani was under siege by British forces. Despite another defeat in Jhansi, Tantya remained resolute and joined forces with Rani Lakshmibai in Gwalior to overthrow its pro-British ruler. However, their hopes were shattered when they faced defeat once again at Kotah-ke-Serai on June 17th. Tragically, during this battle, Rani Lakshmibai lost her life. While many rebels surrendered or went into hiding after these defeats, Tantya managed to elude capture until April 1859 when betrayal led to his ultimate demise – he was captured and subsequently hanged. This remarkable print not only immortalizes Tantia Topi but also serves as a testament to his unwavering spirit and determination in fighting for India's independence during a tumultuous period in history.
