EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating photograph showcases the Indian Mutiny Medal 1857-58, belonging to Lieutenant Joseph Orchard. This historical artifact is a testament to the bravery and valor displayed by Orchard during one of India's most significant uprisings. Lieutenant Joseph White Orchard was born in India in 1825 and received his education in Scotland. Returning to his birthplace in 1847, he joined the 33rd Bengal Native Infantry as an ensign. It was during this time that he actively participated in suppressing the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859), notably being present at the siege and capture of Delhi. In recognition of his outstanding service, Orchard was awarded the Indian Mutiny Medal with a clasp specifically for Delhi. The medal group also includes another prestigious honor - the India General Service Medal 1854-95. Orchard's military career continued beyond the mutiny, commanding the 6th Punjab Police Battalion on an expedition against the Mahsuds on North West Frontier under Brigadier Neville Chamberlain's leadership. His dedication led him to retire with an honorary rank of major-general in 1880. This remarkable print not only captures a tangible piece of history but also pays homage to Lieutenant Joseph Orchard's unwavering commitment and contributions to British colonial efforts in India.
