EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the grandeur of a drawing room at Warter Priory in Yorkshire. Taken from Giles Worsley's book "England's Lost Houses" published in 2002, this image showcases the exquisite interior of a lost architectural gem. The original 17th-century house was refronted in 1872 for Lord Muncaster, and later purchased by Charles Wilson (later Lord Nunburnholme) in 1878. Under his ownership, a clock tower and the magnificent Great Hall were added between 1885-1895. Sadly, this majestic structure met its demise in 1972 when it was demolished. The photograph reveals an opulent double-height space adorned with oak paneling that exudes Victorian elegance. The tudor-style architecture is complemented by a marble balustrade that adds to the regal ambiance of the room. Through this image, we catch a glimpse into the past and witness the splendor that once graced Warter Priory. It serves as a poignant reminder of England's lost heritage and invites us to appreciate the beauty of historic stately homes. Bridgeman Images has expertly captured this moment in time through photography, allowing us to marvel at both the craftsmanship of Victorian architecture and mourn what has been destroyed. This print is not only visually stunning but also holds historical significance as it preserves memories of an extraordinary place that no longer exists.
