EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a page from the Hunterian Psalter, dating back to the 12th century. The artwork, created by an anonymous English School artist, measures 29.2x19.1 cm and is housed in the Glasgow University Library in Scotland. The image depicts the month of June, with intricate details brought to life through pen and ink as well as tempera on vellum. In the foreground, we see a bearded man and a youthful figure cutting clover (?) using long silver sickles with white handles and forked sticks. The man dons a wide-brimmed hat along with a slate-colored tunic, red hose, and brown boots; while the youth stands bareheaded wearing a green tunic paired with grey hose and black boots. Adjacent to this scene lies the symbol of Cancer - represented by an illuminated crab breathing fire from mouths at both ends. Against a green background adorned with black chequer tracery, this striking imagery adds depth to the composition. The Hunterian Psalter itself contains various sections including Kalendarivm (calendar), Psalterivm (psalms), Litania (litany), Preces Qvaedam (specific prayers). Formerly known as York Psalter before its acquisition by Glasgow University Library's collection named after Dr William Hunter. With its meticulously written text in one hand and thirteen full-page illustrations featuring gilt accents, historiated initials adorning each Psalm's first verse - this remarkable piece offers viewers an enchanting glimpse into medieval artistry.
