EDITORS COMMENTS
The Dutch in the Medway, illustration from A History of England by C. R. L. Fletcher and Rudyard Kipling, 1911 (colour litho) captures a pivotal moment in history during the Second Anglo-Dutch War. This dramatic print depicts the successful Dutch attack on the English naval base at Chatham, known as the Raid on the Medway. Led by Lieutenant-Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, the Dutch forces bombarded and captured Sheerness before sailing up the River Thames to Gravesend and eventually reaching Chatham. In a devastating blow to English naval power, they burned three capital ships and ten lesser vessels while towing away two prized warships - Unity and Royal Charles, flagship of the English fleet. This audacious raid marked one of the worst defeats suffered by British military forces and ultimately led to a swift end to hostilities with a favorable peace for the Dutch. The consequences were far-reaching as it reshaped maritime power dynamics in Europe. Henry Justice Ford's vibrant color lithograph brings this historic event to life with its meticulous attention to detail. The chaos of battle is vividly depicted against a backdrop of smoke-filled skies and burning ships. As we gaze upon this image from our private collection, we are reminded of both triumphs and tragedies that have shaped our past. It serves as an enduring testament to courage, strategy, and resilience amidst conflict.
