EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-coloured etching, titled "Enchantments lately seen upon the Mountain of Wales, or Shon-ap-Morgan's Reconcilement to the Fairy Princess" is a satirical masterpiece by James Gillray. Published in 1796 and courtesy of the Warden and Scholars of New College, Oxford, this artwork offers a glimpse into the scandalous affairs and political turmoil surrounding George, Prince of Wales. In this Georgian-era cartoon, we witness an extravagant scene unfolding on a mountainous coast. The central figure is none other than Prince George himself, depicted with his characteristic bicorn hat and military uniform adorned with plumes. He is shown embracing Mrs Fitzherbert while being knocked off his regal perch by a voice from heavens disapproving his unfaithfulness to Princess Caroline of Brunswick. The artist skillfully incorporates elements of enchantment into the composition; horns sprout from George's head as he falls through a cloud towards an opulent gown with a cloven hoof at its hem. Meanwhile, troops from both navy and army are engaged in scandalous dancing around them. Gillray's social satire captures not only the wayward son's liaisons but also highlights the general dissatisfaction towards him among society and even King George III himself. This print serves as both entertainment for viewers and commentary on the turbulent times it was created in. Overall, this engraving showcases Gillray's mastery in caricature artistry while providing us with insight into one of history's most notorious scandals involving royalty.
