EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures an illustration by Andre Gill in "La Lune rousse" from 1877. The artwork depicts the publication of Victor Hugo's controversial book, "Histoire d'un crime" which faced censorship upon its release on October 1st. In response to the ban, La Lune rousse announced the unfortunate news to its readers on October 7th, stating that they would have to settle for an advertisement for Eau Bazana instead. The image showcases Louis Alexandre Gosset de Guines dit Gill's satirical drawing skills as he portrays a scene filled with symbolism and critique. Amongst a backdrop of several bald eagles representing freedom and power, a single chair stands prominently in the center. This piece of furniture represents authority and control over artistic expression through censorship. Gill's use of color adds depth and vibrancy to this thought-provoking cartoon-like artwork. The satirical nature is evident as it scathingly critiques both French culture and the act of censoring creative works. Through this photograph print captured by Isabelle Eshraghi, viewers are transported back to the late nineteenth century when artists like Gill were challenging societal norms through their artistry. It serves as a reminder of the importance of free speech and artistic expression in any society.
