EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Lieutenant (later Captain) Charles Swanston, a distinguished member of the Poona Irregular Horse during the early 19th century. Painted by an unknown artist around 1819, this oil on canvas portrait captures Swanston in his full military regalia. Standing tall and proud, he is depicted wearing a long brown-drab kurta and a wide red lungi, symbolizing his affiliation with the Poona Irregular Horse. In this striking image, Swanston holds the bridle of his unsettled horse firmly in his right hand while gripping a pistol at his waist. In his left hand rests a bamboo lance, further emphasizing both his readiness for battle and command over this elite cavalry unit. The Poona Irregular Horse was established on June 15th, 1817 as part of the Treaty of Poona between the East India Company and Baj Rao II, the last Peshwa of the Maratha Confederacy. Originally maintained at their own expense by Baj Rao II and stationed within their territory, this force would later be renamed as the 34th Prince Albert Victors Own Poona Horse. Lieutenant Charles Swanston's portrait serves as a testament to not only his individual bravery but also to all those who served alongside him in this esteemed regiment. This remarkable piece from London's National Army Museum offers viewers an intimate glimpse into history and honors those who dedicated their lives to protecting their nation.
